El Centro, CA to San Diego, CA
120 miles
Well, I'm pretty much at the end of the trip. Only a short hop to San Diego and clear skies to travel under (thank goodness!).
I have mixed feelings as I head out this morning. I am excited about completing an amazing adventure. I am looking forward to going home. I am keen to see San Diego and talk to people in the biggest city on this trip. And I am itching to write down and organize the hundreds of thoughts racing through my head about what I've learned regarding people's attitudes toward money, credit and debt. It has been fascinating and enlightening.
But for now, I have to concentrate on winding my way up and down these beautiful mountains east of San Diego. It's incredible, and somewhat frightening, to see huge swathes of mountainside blackened from the recent wildfires.
Having dropped off the bike at a dealership in El Cajon that will ship it back to me in Rockville, I join the intrepid camera crew in the support van. Jim Tehan has been responsible for filming this adventure and has done an outstanding job. Andrew Randall has acted as producer, van driver and frequent pillion passenger. I thank them both for all their help in documenting this journey.
Having filmed some fascinating interviews at the harbor (including an interview with another film crew who were shooting a music video), we head off into the Gaslamp Quarter, ground zero for San Diego's shopping, dining and entertainment. We are going to take a well-earned break this evening and prepare for an early flight home tomorrow morning.
I hope you have enjoyed following along with me on this cross-country trek.
Check back here soon for updates on the book that I will be writing and on the documentary that we will put together. Both will give a more detailed account of the trip.
What's next? Maybe the northern part of the country in the spring. Maybe the U.K. Or Europe. It would be interesting to find out if people's relationships with money are different around the globe.
Stay tuned.
