The Back Roads of American Debt

Day 5 — Saturday, November 8, 2003

Meridian, MS to Pineville, LA
273.8 miles

At last! Back onto the back roads. The weather is beautiful today, so I can get to see some of the country, rather than the back of a semi on some anonymous interstate.

Found a classic small town in Bay Springs, Mississippi, just south of Meridian, and spoke to the owner of a dry cleaning business and a local preacher. Even men of God have money troubles sometimes.

Also had a VERY interesting chat with a young woman who told us all about her purchases from Victoria's Secret. You'll have to wait for the book for more about that.

Things were a little slower going as we headed west on Route 84, but much more colorful. We crossed the Mighty Mississippi just west of Natchez and called it a day at Pineville in yet another state. Most people never think beyond New Orleans when they think of Louisiana. I'm hoping to learn a little bit more about the place and the people as we travel through it tomorrow.
