The Back Roads of American Debt

Day 6 — Sunday, November 9, 2003

Pineville, LA to Huntsville, TX
218 miles

Another day, another state! But just before we left Louisiana for the Lone Star State, I stopped at a roadside flea market to speak to the proprietors. From the looks of things, these were people who had seen tough times. Sure enough, both had had their own difficulties with money but were now content to get by with whatever their little business could generate for them. They even said they would keep on working if they won the lottery! I believed them.

A picture is definitely beginning to emerge now about how people relate to money across the country. It seems that most folks don't really give it much thought at all; they just keep spending and buying what they need, or in many cases "want," until they run out of cash, credit or both and the creditors come knocking on the door. Nobody thinks about money until the lack of it causes them a problem. Hmmm. What can we do about that? I'll have to give it some thought.

Met a fellow biker along the way, in Texas -- a Harley rider. Bikers all look out for each other on the road. I wish the same could be said for all people everywhere.
