The Back Roads of American Debt

Day 8 — Tuesday, November 11, 2003

San Antonio, TX to Van Horn, TX
433 miles

Yes, we're STILL in Texas. It's a VERY big state.

I got some excellent "quickie" interviews along the River Walk in San Antonio this morning. It's a really cool place. Lots of bars and restaurants along a very scenic canal. You should pay a visit if you ever get the chance.

I then hopped onto I-10 to try and cover as much ground as possible in order to keep on schedule. The truth is, there really is nothing much between San Antonio and El Paso, so I could afford to put pedal to the metal, or, to be more precise, wrist to the. . . oh, I can't think of a clever rhyme, but you get the idea.

The roads in Texas are particularly suitable for high speed cruising, so I took advantage of it and blasted through some of the most beautiful scenery I have come across so far on this trip. It's been mountain views just about all the way. Awesome! It truly gives you a sense of how vast and relatively undeveloped this country really is.

I stopped at around 5:30 p.m. and got to see the sun set behind the Eagle Mountains. It doesn't get much better than this.

I'm hoping to speak to some people along the Mexican border tomorrow and get through New Mexico and into Arizona. Do the people in the Southwest think differently about money from people in the east? I'll let you know tomorrow.
